The Federal CARES Act includes funds for students to help with immediate needs related to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis. Santa Barbara City College has been allocated approximately $3.2 Million that will go directly to students in the form of CARES Act Emergency Grants.
The CARES Act Emergency Grants are separate and distinct from the SBCC Foundation COVID-19 Emergency Grants which were offered in Spring 2020. We are enormously grateful to the SBCC Foundation
for their ability to step in immediately to provide SBCC Foundation COVID-19 Emergency
Grants to our students. We hope these immediate funds were able to provide students
with a bridge until other public funds became available.
The first round of Federal CARES Act provided public assistance to SBCC students experiencing
hardships in Spring 2020. It made available $1,000 CARES Act Emergency Grants available to over 2000 students. The College must follow the federal regulations governing the use of these funds.
As such, an application will be required for students requesting a CARES Act Emergency
Grant for Fall 2020.
Application and Considerations for Funding
We know that the true fiscal impact of the COVID-19 health emergency is profound for
our students. The effects of the disruption in our operations and the impacts to our
economy will be long-term. While we are grateful for the CARES Act funding, we know
it is not enough to meet the ongoing needs of our students. You are encouraged to
read the information about this grant opportunity carefully to be prepared to submit
your application.
To be eligible for a CARES Act Emergency Grant, students must be currently enrolled in a credit program at SBCC.
International and undocumented students are eligible for these funds.
Applications may be prioritized depending on the number of applications received and
available funding. Considerations will include:
- The level of impact of coronavirus on your life.
- The amount of time remaining to educational goal completion.
- Students who self-identify into any of the following:
- Students who are Pell Grant eligible
- Students who are eligible for the California College Promise Grant (CCPG)
Questions can be sent to caresact@sbcc.edu. Please note that due to the volume of questions to expect to receive, that it could
be more than a week before a question is answered.
